Diamond Explained

A diamond’s value is set by its appeal. It is trying to regulate the industry and produce a standard for diamond comparison. The GIA set a methodology of diamond grading, and it is called the 4 C’s of diamonds.

The 4C’s stand for Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. In reality, it is more complicated than that, and being diamond dealers, we look at dozens of factors, but the grading system does do the trick in providing good estimates for the diamond’s value by enabling you to compare similar diamonds.

Martin Rapaport invented the diamond price chart, also referred to as the diamond price list or diamond price index.

What is the Rapaport price chart?

The Raw diamond price chart, also known as the Rapaport price chart, is the list in a matrix that provides a benchmark to a diamond’s value based on its 4 C’s.

A matrix is two-dimensional; there are 4 C’s and many price charts. Each is of a weight group.

However, Cut is considered important C is not in the chart but is given weight by discounting poorly cut diamonds.

Below is the Rapaport price chart for round diamonds weighing 0-5 carats:

As you can easily recognize, each cube/ matrix displays a weight class. You have the diamond’s color on the left side and the diamond’s clarity on the top side.

For awareness about the diamond’s value, find your class’s matrix, crosscheck the row of your color with the column of your clarity, and you get the result.

Important Note- diamond prices are per carat.

Why invest in diamonds?

The investment will concern quality stones that will remain a reference value. Investment diamonds are subject to HRD, GIA, or IGI certification, all of which have an outstanding reputation in Europe.

Moreover, uncertainties connected to the stock market and economic conditions encourage investments in safe havens like gemstones. However, investing in diamonds means holding assets in $ USD, which is very highlighting, especially when Europe is in a downward phase at all levels
